yeah it's that time again. i turned 32 on monday april 30th. that's a lot of years i guess. it's been a while since i was the little kid in the picture. but at least you can see where i got the fro from.

best thing about birthdays is that it's the best time to get your friends together and have fun with good people. we did it up for my dirty 30 (remember CHASING 30?), so we're doing it again.

the official party is this friday may 4th @ SOMA. me and my friend keith aka k2 play records there on the first friday of each month, first one was in april and it was a huge success, and our second one just happens to be the perfect chance to have my bday party.

since the start of the Chase studio lock-in and the end of the 6 year run at insomnia thursdays last year, me and my good friend K2 have been laying low as far as djing goes, but when our friend finished the reno on his new bar, we had to dust off the dj crates again.

our SOMA montly will be on a similar vibe as the Insomnia thursdays. it's a nice loungy comfortable place, some tables/couches/etc and a small dancefloor, kitchen, etc.

musically we're going to be giving you a mashup of all we love just as we were at insomnia, we will probably throw some drum'n'bass in the mix if we feel like it but this is not a drum'n'bass event, we do not have a musical policy beyond whatever is good. for the past few years, between K2 and I, that usually means lots of funk, soul, reggae, house, broken beat, and soulful drum'n'bass

don't get me wrong. i'm happy being locked in the studio. i almost have something that sounds like a song. i don't regret giving up all the gigs, it was necessary to get shit done. plus, there's always another party.

that being said, i miss the labyrinth lounge. my good friend frankie gunns has been doing wednesdays there for i dunno, 4 years? 5 years? 3 years? when he asked me to come join him a year or two or three back, i gave up 3 of my 4 wednesdays at the blue moon to do it. that's a really big deal.

even though i gave it up, some friends of mine are less lazy. look, they even make flyers.

it's important to wake up and seize each day with both hands and kiss it square on the month, embrance the wonder of our existence and oh screw that shit. i woke up on the wrong side of the bed and/or world today. my final automated testing run failed miserably while i was sleeping. i ran out of milk and had to make my scrambled eggs with soy milk. my cats breath smells like cat food. and so on.

luckily, today, the music listed below is currently getting me by and keeping me productive.

this is a kinda interesting one. the mixing is sloppy as fuck in points, but the ideas and the tunes are good. the interesting thing is that these are some of my favorite tunes from 98 - today, i'm surprised i ended pulling them all out during what was just another random mix session. and i like the way they fit together.

first tune is from 2000 or so, one of the first records i ever ordered online, and although i didn't know it then i recently discovered that it's actually quite rare, and it's marcus intalex under an alias. it's on an ep called the so bad ep, and the whole ep is, well, so bad. one of my favorite hidden gems.

santiago ir another one of my favorite photek tunes, it's so clean, simple, and funky. it's one of those "is this drum'n'bass?" tunes. i love those ones, and very useful in the mix for moving between genres/bpms/etc

freeway is another one of my favorite photek things, photek at his production and engineering best, it's cold, but it's still got the funk

otto's way is another old record, late 90s i think, this is 2 of the 4 members of bad company, but it's pure soul and funk. you can still hear some early touches of the bc sound in there though. imo, this and all strung out are the two best tunes fresh has ever touched

next thing is something from breakage, came out around the same time last year as the "this too shall pass" lp on bassbin which is one of my top lps of the year along with the amit "never ending" lp and the mist:i:cal "eleventh hour" lp. it's different than the usual dubwise breakage style, but it's deep as fuck, and i love that. even though the style is a little different, the exceptional breakage mastering is still there.

ah, eleventh hour. this is the title cut off the mist:i:cal "eleventh hour", this cut features mc drs, and who am i kidding, this is my lp of the year, along with drs, there are also cuts with robert owens and diane charlemagne (the stature and love of these two vocalists in the realm of electronic music borders on reverence). i love this tune.

coming in next with ancestral by alaska. this tune gives me shivers. 2006 release. shivers i tell you.

never is one of my favorite dillinja tunes ever, and that's saying something. never came out on a proper release, this is a dodgy pressing, 1 sided bootleg, but at least it's in my crate now.

mixing gets a little dodgy from here, but move your body (2nd last tune) and plastic soul (last tune) did come together very nicely for a little bit

this one reminds me of that line from alice in wonderland about "down the rabbit hole" ... in that sometimes i just start playing records and i really don't know where it's gonna go. that's what happened this time ... started off innocently enough with some nice deep foul play and other stuff, and then took an unexpected turn into some nasty techno business, and coming home with beachdrifta, one of the best tunes ever from rufige kru

some people have asked me how these mixes are made, this one as all the others are 100% vinyl, played on 2 or 3 turntables, recorded using protools/digi002/macbook pro, 1 take, no post-production/editing whatsoever.

one of the places you can still catch me djing occasionally is on the Rinseout Show along with Medicine Muffin and Frankie Gunns, saturday nights from 10 pm - 12 on CKLN 88.1 fm and online at www.ckln.fm

occasionally we record the shows, this is a show we recorded back in summer 2006 when Frankie Gunns was in fine form. this mix is all Frankie Gunns, i think i might have put down one tune but that's it. but it's definitely worth the download, 2 hours of the best in jungle/drum'n'bass (+1 nice reggae tune to start the show), lots of hot new stuff, some old stuff, it's all just good music.

boymerang clang fest

first, ten second of history: boymerang is a guy that made 1 great drum'n'bass album back in the 90s called balance of the force and then went back to other musical pursuits under another name.

i picked up the album on my first trip to london a few years ago for five pounds in a used record shop on the street with all the record shops (can't remember it's name). sticker says music & vedeo exchange, 34-42 notting hill gate, w11 + branches.

i was having a conversation with some people about it so i dug it out and had a little mix with it, mixing is really dodgy in points, but for people that haven't heard the the album it gives you a little taste

good music, no record player required

the dj world continues to shift more and more from vinyl to more digital technologies ... more and more djs are performing sets with cd decks, laptops, etc. cds are no longer just a tool for wedding djs. of course, some of us old dinosaurs are still lugging around 3 crates of vinyl and my back is not happy about it ... but these digital technologies still cannot reproduce the sound quality and depth of vinyl, in my opinion. despite the many advantages of walking to a gig with a laptop and a hard drive and/or a book of cds, i'm still waiting for the sound quality to improve. it's almost there, getting closer every day. give it a year or two.

and as bill cosby would say, i told you that story so i could tell you this one: more and more of the music i play is available to people that don't own a record player. i'm buying way less tunes nowadays, but there are still some tunes i need to have, and for the past few months, a lot of those tunes have been coming from marcus intalex and soul:r. if you've downloaded any of my recent drum'n'bass mixes then you've definitely heard a few of these tunes. it's some of the best drum'n'bass i've heard in years in my opinion, and i haven't heard intalex sound this good since the days of the classic releases on 31 records (how you make me feel, neptune, etc)

my older brother Jason is basically the best brother in the world and also a very good friend of mine. he's a taller stronger smarter more responsible version of me, with no hair. i'm the better dj and he's the better dad, and i think we all know which is more important. (if you said dj, grow up.)

this mix is cd 1 of a 3 cd set i made for him for christmas, the other 2 cds aren't dj mixes, one of them is a recording of some old bill cosby records, the other is an unmixed compilation of funk and other tasty bits from my "funk & other" record crate ... i figure it's only fair since i'm the one that got our dad's old marantz tube amp and turntable. you can download the mix below, but the other 2 cds are just between me and him for now.

there are three main things you should know:

everyone always says that when you are in the studio, if you can, just record everything. i've always believed it, never been able to do it, until. i'll talk about the new toys later, first this.
ok, so i'm recording everything, and i'm doing way less live dj gigs (by choice, also more about that later) and i'm just also getting less precious and anal about the mixes. i'm just some tunes.
one of the best people in the world told me the best curse/diss i've ever heard in my life, she heard it from someone else, it goes like this: you are what you are, and you hang from my a**.

which brings us to the whole point. these are some random pieces of audio taken from the running studio track. they are what they are, i am deleting the session, here is a raw audio dump.

#1: mike shannon f. anais + more --> possible conclusions to stories that never end - lp - scape records, germany

if i really have to call this something besides good music, it gets hard. some people are calling this mike shannon's "experimental" or "downtempo" lp. i guess given that he's better known for more driving/gritty/dirty techno (or so i hear, haven't actually heard much/any of it), i guess that label might make sense.

what i do know is that this is a labour of love, sweat, tears, and excess stomach acid, involving mike shannon and a few other people, including one of my favorite people in the whole world. it's kinda breaky/glitchy/downtempo/jazzy/interesting music. more details here

friends of mine that know bass are doing this. wallace studios, from what i hear, bears a slight reslemblance to a concrete room underground with lots of bass. dillinja and lemon d are drum'n'bass artists/producers with a fine appreciation of bass, skream is a dubstep guy. i don't know about you, but i'm excited about a concrete room undergroun full of bass with some serious badman flexing in a drum'n'bass and dubstep style. if that sounds good to you don't miss it. and bring your earplugs.

so apparantly this is how it begins. i created this a while ago, but if there's some way to mark the start of a blog, then that mark sits closer to here than there.

we already have tempaural.com which is as close as it gets to an official site for me, ryan chase, mostly concerning what i'm doing musically.

this blog on the other hand, is for blogging. mostly still music stuff, but finally a place to talk about what's going on besides this gig and that mix.

i will make all efforts to avoid drowning in my own ego or crawling up my own ass ... in plain words, i realize that no one but me really cares about most of the random passing thoughts i have, so i'll spare you most of them. not all though. sorry. if it starts to smell like a cow pasture in here, lemme know.
